Readers React: ‘Comfort women’ memorial highlights abuse worldwide

To the editor: Residents of Glendale ought to be proud that their City Council voted to keep the “comfort women” memorial in the city’s Central Park. (“Federal judge upholds ‘comfort women’ statue in Glendale park,” Aug. 11)

“Battering” of women occurs in international and national arenas. Some powerful figures in the Vatican choose to exert power over women living the Christian gospels, including those in the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. Congress refuses to pass a law that would help close the gender pay gap.

We continue to allow mistreatment of women in such influential organizations where profound respect for all ought to be the norm. What hope, then, can we offer to anyone?
