Letters: Surrounded by surveillance

Share

Re “Feinstein emerges as spy agencies’ staunch defender,” Jan. 19

I applaud the position of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Privacy as we once knew it is no longer possible.

Every time we go through security at the airport or at a public venue, we are giving up our privacy — but that is how people who would do us harm are caught.

Every time we are on a surveillance camera, our privacy is invaded — but that is how the alleged Boston Marathon bombers were identified and caught.

Unfortunately, this is the world in which we live — “live” being the operative word.

The National Security Agency is doing its job. Edward Snowden put every one of us in jeopardy by giving the enemy information to undermine our security.

Memo to Feinstein: Thank you for your concern, but I don’t want the government to protect me from “terrorist bombing plots.”

That slope is too slippery.

Instead, let’s spend taxpayer money protecting us from regularly occurring events such as traffic fatalities, industrial accidents, hospital errors and school (and other) shootings.
