Opinion: A heated debate over hot schools

Share

To the editor: I have taught middle school for 32 years, mostly without AC. Last September and October, there were 35 days in which my classroom was over 90 degrees. And guess what? I am not alone. The people who pick our food do not have air conditioning. Nor do those who build our roads and highways and those who construct our houses and buildings.

Yes, it is hot and uncomfortable. But it really isn’t front-page news. Let’s focus on what really matters in today’s world.

To the editor: A few years ago, a classroom at the high school where I taught hit 118F. The principal’s response was that fortunately, we didn’t have many days of 100 degree heat.

I then strolled up to the administration offices where the thermostats were set at 69F. Two employees were enjoying the cool in an area roughly the size of my classroom.

When administration says students come first, I suppose room temperature must be an exception.
