Opinion: Ok, just call it ‘Trumpcare’ then, but don’t deny health coverage to average Americans

To the editor: So, Donald Trump and the GOP want to repeal and replace the ACA, or Obamacare, quickly?

I see a very simple solution that could be implemented as soon as tomorrow without any new bumps in the road. Congress should pass a law that simply renames the ACA as the ATA, or the Affordable Trumpcare Act “(”Trumpcare.”)

( “Democratic allies gird for battle to save Obamacare,” Jan. 11 )

I think our president-elect would be overjoyed, as he always is when he sees his name in print.

Then Congress could do what it should have done years ago (with a program the GOP opposed because Obama implemented it): start to implement fixes to it that would actually be of benefit to the American people.

To the editor: “Repeal and replace” ACA is easy, I say: just give America the healthcare coverage that all members of Congress have (for life at taxpayer expense). Can’t do that?

Then Congress should be required to accept any healthcare system it creates for the American public for its own.

If the coverage is good and complete enough for me, it should also be fine for my representatives in government.

To the editor: I suggest that one reason the Republicans are so intent on destroying Obamacare is the name. It will be a constant reminder that a Democrat, our first African-American president, has made something relevant to all Americans, something important and lasting for which he will always be remembered.

To the editor: Here is my open letter to Paul Ryan and his cronies:

You had six years to improve the ACA. You had six years to cross the aisle and work with your Democratic counterparts to work out the bugs. Instead, you wasted six years and refused to help the people of this country.

Now you have a strange creature ostensibly on your side and you will try to repeal once again. You will deny women healthcare, you will deny pre-existing conditions, you will deny keeping children up to 26 on their parents coverage?

My question is: Why do you hate women, the disadvantaged and the vulnerable? What have any of these types of people ever done to you? Will you next harm Medicare and show your hatred of the elderly?

To the editor: If Republicans succeed in repealing Obamacare without a viable replacement, there goes health insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions. Many people who were born with disabilities or diseases won’t be able to obtain necessary treatment. Also, it is not uncommon to develop a chronic illness, or to suffer an accident that leads to disability. Health problems are largely not within strict individual control.

Why don’t Republicans care about the health needs of people who have chronic health problems?

To the editor: It is outrageous that an insurance company’s bottom-line be the determinate factor in the care of our sick citizens. It is inhumane that mega moneymaking corporations such as Anthem Blue Cross and Navitus Health Solutions make ailing patients and their loving caretakers run through an obstacle course of denials before a chance to receive the treatments and medications to sustain and improve their lives.

David Lazarus’ column is a solid argument in support of a Medicare-for-all type healthcare system. Nations with such a system have better outcomes at lower costs.
