Opinion: Trump’s Muslim-ban rationale should apply to guns after the Las Vegas massacre
To the editor: When he first proposed a ban on Muslims entering the United States, then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said we needed to take this action until we can “figure out what the hell is going on.”
Stephen Paddock, according to the president, was a “demented” man. Nonetheless, he legally obtained dozens of guns, thousands of rounds of ammunition and accessories to convert rifles into combat killing machines. (“The mystery of Stephen Paddock — gambler, real estate investor, mass killer,” Oct. 2)
Isn’t it incumbent upon Trump to apply his rationale and impose an immediate national gun ban until we can “figure out what the hell is going on”?

To the editor: Fifty-nine people were murdered in Las Vegas. This is a terrible tragedy that, rightly so, was followed by national media coverage and national soul searching about how to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
Since January of this year, an average of 59 people per month have been killed in Chicago. This is a terrible, ongoing tragedy that has been followed by little national media coverage and national silence about how to prevent it from continuing.
What am I missing?
