Update: Because of government sequestration, both the Navy Blue Angels and Air Force Thubderbirds performance teams have been grounded. Check air show websites for updated performers.
There must be something in the air. Actually, there is, all over the state throughout the year. It's Florida air shows, and the big players are making quite a few stops in the Sunshine State in 2013.
Both the Air Force Thunderbirds and the Panhandle-based Navy Blue Angels will grace the skies at four shows each. There are air shows nearly year-round in Florida, with some of the biggest in the spring and late fall.
Both of the U.S. military's precision teams will hit the state the same weekend this year with the Blue Angels in Key West and the Thunderbirds in Titusville on March 23-24.
The Blue Angels then return to MacDill Air Force base in Tampa for the weekend of April 6-7 and don't return until the annual summer stop in Pensacola Beach on July 13. They end up their season with two naval base shows, in Jacksonville on Oct. 26-27 and the season finale at their homebase in Pensacola on Nov. 1-2.
The Thunderbirds are debuting in Florida at the TICO Warbird AirShow in Tampa at Space Coast Regional Airport and follow up as headliners for the Sun n' Fun Fly-In at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport on April 13-14 and then returning to the Lauderdale Air Show on April 20-21. The Lauderdale stop is sort of a mulligan for 2012. The Lauderdale Air Show was making its return to the air show mix after several years hiatus, and was unfortunately rained out one of the two days the Thunderbirds were to perform.
The Air Force team then leaves the south for the rest of spring and summer and returns in the fall for one show -- the renamed Cocoa Beach Air and Space Show on Oct. 19-20.
