An employee of a company producing and selling natural cosmetics is covered with a molasses representing oil, to protest against Canada's tar sands development, during an action in Vienna June 15. According to environmental activist organization Greenpeace, large areas of the Boreal Forest are being clearcut to make way for development in the tar sands, the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. The tar sands are huge deposits of bitumen, a tar-like substance that is turned into oil through complex and energy-intensive processes that cause widespread environmental damage.
