The TV landscape was littered with sitcoms during the 1989-90 viewing season. Of course, we were all watching the Magic on the nights they played. But on those off nights, viewers, such as the Magic's Steven Hunter here, were tuning into sitcoms in droves. Leading the ratings race that TV season was Roseanne, one of the most talked-about, controversial and popular sitcoms ever. It starred Roseanne Barr (she still used her last name back then) in the title role and John Goodman as her husband. Among the other top 10 shows that season: The Cosby Show, A Different World, Cheers and The Golden Girls.
