Temporary water heaters have been installed in the canal where manatees will hang out at the FPL power plant this winter, on Tuesday, November 23, 2010. During last winter’s brutal cold snap, about 1,000 manatees gathered at the warm-water discharge of the FPL power plant at the Indian River near Cocoa. Among all other power plants and natural springs, it was the state’s biggest gathering of manatees seeking to escape lethally cold waters.
