A light haze softens the starkness of the crosses photographed by Irene Stoffer of Maitland at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial in Hamm. She and her husband, Jerry, visited the memorial, one of 14 permanent World War II American military cemeteries erected on foreign soil by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The cemetery was established Dec. 29, 1944, during the Ardennes offensive that came to be known as the Battle of the Bulge. Gen. George S. Patton is among the 5,076 military personnel buried in the cemetery.
