Murder suspect Bessman Okafor and his pregnant girlfriend Sherria Gordon, both accused in the shooting death of a 19-year-old man, were ordered held without bond by an Orange County judge today.
The defendants appeared separately and said little during their short appearances. Gordon is nearing her due date and will likely deliver her child while incarcerated.
Okafor is charged with first-degree murder in Alex Zaldivar's execution-style shooting death on Sept. 10. Gordon is charged with accessory to murder.
Police say Okafor plotted to kill Zaldivar and his roommates to prevent them from testifying against him in an earlier home invasion case at the same address. Before dawn on Sept. 10, the three residents were roused from bed, lined up in the living room and each shot in the back of the head.
Brienna Campos and her brother Remington survived the shooting and called for help.
Zaldivar and Brienna Campos were slated to testify against Okafor on Sept. 11 in an earlier home invasion case in which they, and others, were bound and held at gunpoint.
Gordon is accused of lying to police and trying to help conceal the murder.
The suspected killer's brother, mother and friend have all been charged in connection with the case.
At the time of the deadly crime, Okafor was out on bond and being monitored by a radio frequency device for the May home invasion at the same home.
