An app recently launched by the company that owns Orlando's Fashion Square Mall makes finding a movie and your favorite store easier for mobile device owners.
Mall owner Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT) launched the iOS and Android apps earlier this month and they feature store listings, dining suggestions, a calendar of special events, discounts at select stores and kiosks, and a listing of movies playing at Premiere Cinema 14 at Fashion Square Mall.
The store listing includes a summary of the store and a button that shows the store's location on a map. The trends tab is currently showing back to school styles, summary of upcoming movie releases, book reviews, and the dates when popular artists like Green Day, No Doubt, and Aerosmith are set drop their latest albums.
It does have a few kinks: Panera Bread does not appear in their Food & Restaurants tab, but it shows up under the Dining tab. Also, the thumbnails used to illustrate the stores are low resolution and look blurry.
Despite those shortcomings, it's one of the better apps available for mall visitors in Central Florida.
Simon Malls, which owns The Florida Mall, Orlando Premium Outlets, and Waterford Lakes Town Center, among others offers a similar app for iOS and Android, but it lacks the photos and store summaries. However, the app allows users to post comments about the mall or a particular store on Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare.
Users on the Simon Malls app can also leave a tip about a particular store or email a link of the store to a friend.
Officials at The Mall at Millenia did not immediately contact the Orlando Sentinel, but a quick check of their website doesn't show if the mall's owner, The Forbes Company, offers shoppers an app.
