AGE: Turns 30 on Feb. 9, 2012.

HOW HE CAME TO ORLANDO: Drafted 20th overall in 2004 by the Denver Nuggets, then traded to Orlando for a future first-round pick. . . . Signed a five-year contract extension on Oct. 30, 2007, that includes a player option for 2012-13.
SCOUTING REPORT: Nelson looks like he's in terrific shape, working primarily on strengthening his legs. He averaged 13.1 points and 6.0 assists per game last season. He finally stayed healthy, playing in 76 games, the most since he played in 79 games his rookie season. Keeping his turnovers low always is on his mission statement. He receives criticism because he isn't a pass-first point guard and because his height causes him problems against some opposing point guards. But he's a gritty player who has never shied away from taking a last-second shot.
ODDS & ENDS: Nelson was about 11 years old when one of his friends, Elijah Holmes, was injured in an automobile accident. Elijah broke his neck in three places, and doctors told him he couldn't play on a youth team with Nelson until he recovered. To show his support, Jameer wore Elijah's No. 15 until he returned to action.
