DeLand RB JoJo Kemp has USF as early leader

JoJo Kemp has heard plenty of good things about USF.

He’s visited the Temple Terrace campus before and liked what he saw.

But as the DeLand running back found this weekend, seeing and experiencing are two very different things.

Most recruits showed up to USF’s junior day on Sunday, but Kemp (5-10, 190) decided to go to campus Saturday night to spend time with former DeLand teammate and USF rishing junior safety Mark Joyce.

“It did a lot because without seeing it, you get to hear a lot of stuff about what’s going on. To be here and actually see everything, it meant a lot and lets me know that people weren’t just blowing smoke,” Kemp said. “I actually got to feel for myself and get my own feeling of how I feel about the school, not what everyone else was telling me.”

His extra time at USF was eye-opening.

“Honestly, USF is a great school and right now they’re number one,” said  Kemp, who has South Carolina at No. 2 and Marshall and Miami tied at No. 3.

Kemp — ranked No. 100 on the Sentinel’s 2013 Florida Top 100 — said he loved hanging out with Joyce as well as every other aspect of the visit.

“Really, the players and the coaches, how much they care about you. And the facilities, the campus is real great,” Kemp said. “Everything just stood out to me. This was a wonderful trip that I took and I look forward to taking another one.”

During the trip, Kemp felt a lot of love from USF head coach Skip Holtz and assistant Peter Vaas. The duo told Kemp how much they liked him and that they wanted him to be a Bull.

“I can’t really explain the way I felt,” said Kemp, who ran for 1,013 yards and 12 touchdowns last regular season. “It was a great feeling for a coach like Coach Vass and coach like Coach Holtz, they’ve coached a lot of great players, and for them to tell me that, it meant a lot.”

Although he was flattered, Kemp told the coaches that he won’t be making a decision any time soon. He plans on graduating in December but wants to visit multiple schools before committing somewhere.

After all, we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg in regards to Kemp’s college suitors. He has offers from USF and Marshall, but is expecting South Carolina and Duke to offer soon.
