Belle Glade Glades Day cornerback J.T. Thornton verbally committed to Illinois on Wednesday.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Thornton, who has been starting since he was a sophomore, chose the Illini over West Virginia and Marshall among others, according to Glades Day coach Pete Walker.
"There's not a lot of 6-foot corners out there that can run," Walker said. "The speed and size is what makes him kind of unique. He's very physical."
In track, Thornton won the state 400 meters as a sophomore. It is because of that speed that Walker plans to use Thornton on offense as well this fall.
Illinois now has 13 verbal commitments for the 2011 class, including St. Thomas Aquinas kicker Justin DuVernois.
Verbal commitments are nonbinding. National Signing Day is Feb. 2.
