As night falls at the band field at
in Daytona Beach, members of the legendary B-CU Marching Wildcats begin to arrive for a practice session under the lights. They walk onto the field --first a few at a time-- then 300-plus strong, filling the field in a cacophony of various brass, winds and percussion warming up.
After some preliminary instructions from several drum majors, band director Donovan Wells goes over some finer points of their show to be performed Saturday at the 33rd edition of the
, the annual football game between in-state rivals B-CU and Florida A & M University. For the next two hours, band members practice their pre-game and halftime shows in a marathon of intense, high-stepping marching and big-sound musical pageantry.
