Vernon Hargreaves III, the top-ranked player in the Sentinel’s Florida Top 100, confirmed what has been speculated all week on Thursday, that he will be a Florida Gator.
Mom, Jackie Hargreaves, confirmed her son's commitment via text Thursday evening.
"Yes. it's official. Vernon committed to UF today," read the text.
Hargreaves, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound cornerback at Tampa Wharton High, picked the Gators from a list of five favorites he had unveiled just last week, which included Clemson, Vanderbilt, Miami and Notre Dame.
Hargreaves confirmed his decision to commit to UF via the popular social media platform Twitter, writing “I can officially say I am committed to THE University of Florida ! #GoGators CHOMP CHOMP.”
Vernon III is the son of USF assistant coach Vernon Hargreaves II, who followed head coch Skip Holtz from East Carolina when Holtz took the Bulls top job following the firing of Jim Leavitt in 2010. Many figured that might give USF a leg-up on the competition, but Vernon III has said all along that his father’s position at USF would have no bearing on his decision.
The Gators are getting one of the most athletic players in the country, and that athleticism has not been lost on the national recruiting websites. At 247Sports.com, Hargreaves III ranks as the No.1 cornerback in the country and No. 6 player overall, while Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 2 corner and No. 9 overall player nationally.
Hargreaves, whose older sister, Carina, also attends UF, can play safety, as well, and he also plays receiver for Wharton High.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
