Former West Virginia head football coach Bill Stewart died Monday of an apparent heart attack, West Virginia University announced in a news release.
He was playing in a West Virginia Hospitality and Tourism Association annual golf tournament with former West Virginia athletic director Eddie Pastilong when Stewart collapsed. Stewart was taken to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. West Viginia's athletics department stated it could not provide any further details about his death.
Stewart, 59, posted a 28-12 record at West Virginia from 2007-10. Stewart resigned in June 2011 after a strained relationship with head-coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen came to light. Stewart reportedly asked members of the media to investigate and write disparaging accounts about Holgorsen.
