Chance The Rapper announces 2017 world tour

Metallica isn’t the only act to announce its 2017 tour in the wake of performing as part of Sunday’s 59th annual Grammy Awards telecast.

On Tuesday morning, fresh from his three historical Grammy wins and gospel-fueled hip-hop performance during the telecast, Chance The Rapper announced his 2017 tour dates.

His global concert trek will open with an April 24 show at Valley View Casino Center (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena) and concludes Oct. 3 at the Hollywood Bowl. All of the cities, tour dates and ticket information appear below.

Chance (real name: Chancellor Johnathan Bennett) is 23. He won three Grammys on Sunday - Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album (for “Coloring Book”). In the latter category, he beat out albums by the much better-known Drake and Kanye West.

“This is for every indie artist!” Chance declared as he accepted his Best Rap Album Grammy on Sunday.

What made Chance’s Grammy victories historic is that he is the first artist to ever be nominated, let alone win, who does not have a record contract and whose album that is not available in physical form.

Instead, his music can only be streamed online. More unusual still, he makes all of his songs initially available for free.

Or, as he explained in a recent Vanity Fair interview:

“After I made my second mix-tape and gave it away online, my plan was to sign with a label and figure out my music from there. But after meeting with the three major labels, I realized my strength was being able to offer my best work to people without any limit on it.

“I make money from touring and selling merchandise, and I honestly believe if you put effort into something and you execute properly, you don’t necessarily have to go through the traditional ways.”

Tickets for Chance’s tour go on sale today, Valentine’s Day, at 4 p.m. PST at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at ticketmaster.com and by phone at (800) 745-3000.

Tickets for Chance’s tour-opening April 24 San Diego show go on sale through axs.com, not Ticketmaster. Prices for his San Diego show have not yet been announced. However, tickets for his April 26 Oakland concert are priced from $41.50 to $78.75, which may give an indication of how much tickets for his San Diego concert will cost.
