Grab your hats for these Kentucky Derby viewing parties

Place your bets, grab your hats and find a venue. Kentucky may be across the country, but several San Diego hot spots will be hosting parties with southern charm.

All-Day Kentucky Derby Party

Striders

Beginning at 10 a.m., this downtown high-end sports bar will host a day of festivities for guests, including a “Build Your Own Derby Hat” contest. Guests will be treated with a brunch of blueberry pancakes, breakfast burritos, veggie omelettes and, of course, a famous Kentucky Derby Mint Julep. Attendees should also be ready to place bets because Striders is the only downtown location to place off-track bets for the Derby.

Junior League of San Diego Food & Wine Festival

La Jolla Cove

As the hopeful horses and jockeys prepare for the day’s signature event, “over 50 of San Diego’s best restaurants and beverage purveyors” will offer tastes of signature dishes, wine, beer and cocktails. Along with a viewing party, there will be a silent auction, live music and beer garden to keep the spirits alive. Guests are encouraged to dress in Derby attire.

Derby Day Brunch

Barleymash

This downtown bar is serving up southern style with a side of fun for the day. In honor of the Derby, barleymash chefs will prepare Kentucky’s trademark Cup of Burgoo and open-faced hot brown sandwiches. Guests can also participate in raffles as well as best dressed and best hat contests.

UK Alumni Club Kentucky Derby Party

Miller’s Field Pacific Beach

The wildcats are bringing their favorite day to Pacific Beach. From 2-6 p.m., the University of Kentucky Alumni Club is hosting a free viewing party with raffles, contests and bourbon tastings. Derby glasses will be given out while supplies last, and all proceeds will benefit the San Diego UK Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Kentucky Derby Viewing Party

Hotel Del Coronado

While the country waits to welcome the new Derby champion into the winner’s circle, guests can take part in the “world’s largest champagne toast.” Beginning at 2:45 p.m., the Hotel Del Coronado will toast simultaneously with Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt on Facebook Live with a glass of the Derby’s official champagne sponsor, G. H. Mumm. Guests are then welcome to enjoy mint juleps as they watch the Derby results unfold.

Kentucky Derby Day Del Mar Style

Surfside Race Place

Ring in the new Derby champion at San Diego’s racing headquarters. Throughout the day, guests can celebrate with other racing fans with a patio barbeque, bottled craft craft brews, Las Vegas-style race books and 1,000 TVs. Guests who purchase the Saddle Club package will receive a rose, reserved seat, Derby glass and racing program with the price of admission.
