San Diego entrepreneurs have been launching everything from cold-pressed juices to biomedical research products, transforming this military mega-plex into a startup capital.

No longer just a vacation destination, San Diego has a business scene that’s brewing... and producing a lot more than just beer. These days, the “app for that” may well have been born here, and the mind(s) behind it may have been born not so long ago.

Here are a few dozen local folks who are going for glory, many of whom have traded their jobs to pursue new trades - not to mention to end up in good company.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
I will always be an entrepreneur, whether that is my next startup, becoming an investor or philanthropist... or all three. I love San Diego and I want to continue being a leader not just in America’s Finest City, but in America’s Finest Startups.

Born: Los Angeles
Resides: Solana Beach

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
JOLIE DAWN: My business is a movement to inspire Millennial women to step boldly into their gifts and talents. I believe that entrepreneurship is the most fun game that we have to play on Earth.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
I’m entering a launch with my book, Empowered, Sexy and Free. I am starting a book tour to speak to women all over the country. I am growing my consulting business to help more women around the world launch their businesses. I am planning my next big summit in September 2015.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
My goal is to have more women my age remember their creative power. To reclaim their freedom and say “No” to giving away the best hours of their day in a job they don’t like. To say no to everything in their life that feels contracting and say “Yes” to possibility, entrepreneurship and fearlessness.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
I am driven by vision. I have a vision of my fellow Millennial women who remember who they really are. They remember that they are on this planet, in their particular body, at this particular time in history, for a very special purpose. When one awakens to that purpose, one truly starts living, and the whole planet benefits from her remembrance.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
Next, I will speak on the TED stage and allow more women around the world to have access to this knowledge. I will launch my first big online program to help women around the globe step into their confidence, leadership and entrepreneurship. The projections for this launch: 150 women and $300,000 in sales. I will write another book and make the New York Times Best-Selling list. I will continue to live a life of ease, pleasure, champagne, private jets and meditation gardens.

halfdoorbrewing.com
Born: County Tyrone, Ireland
Resides: East Village

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
STACY DRAYNE: Half Door resides in a turn-of-the-century house in the heart of the East Village, one block from Petco Park. Half Door Brewing Company is an Irish-inspired brewpub concept that focuses on warm, welcoming Irish family-style hospitality. All our beers are brewed on site out of our 544 square-foot brewhouse that is attached to the restaurant.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
We are growing day by day; we have started to distribute our beers to some of the top bars in San Diego, Including Small Bar, The Field Irish Pub, Regale Beagle and Hamilton’s. We are working on phase two of the upper floor of the restaurant.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
We want our customers to feel like they are drinking in our house - warm, welcoming hospitality is our main goal. The staff is the most important part of Half Door, so making sure you have the right people is key.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
I love hearing the good experiences that people have in our establishment. The best reward is having people pick Half Door over the many great restaurants in San Diego.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
Finish phase two of the bar. Continue to watch this small, square brewery pump out so much beer to quench the thirst of the East Villagers. Open a tasting room and distribution warehouse in San Diego and to see Half Door being in the hands of more craft-beer lovers. We would love to expand our brand to a distributing center while still having the brewpub. Having our beers being poured beyond San Diego County.

To continue opening hospitality establishments where employee morale, unpretentious service, consistent food and cutting-edge design are the main goals.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
Creating an enjoyable workplace for employees, enthusiastic customers who are thrilled with the food and design of the restaurants, creating new and edgy concepts and restaurant designs.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
Continue opening Breakfast Republic restaurants, further the branding and add new merchandise items such as my new hot sauce and apparel that is retailing. I would love to potentially open a coffee roasting company to roast coffee for my own restaurants.

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
BLAKE JENSEN: We make fresh, vibrant, comfortable sunglasses at a great price. We were tired of choosing between knockoffs or $150 frames, so we designed an eye-catching, quality product that doesn’t break the bank. Most of our customers have two to three pairs.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
The collaborations we have in the works are a lot of fun. These range from music festivals like Groove Cruise and Lollapalooza to EDM artists to the NBA and NFL. You can follow the magic on Instagram @blenderseyewear.

What accolades have you received?
Best Sunglasses in the World 2015, based on a survey of our moms.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
Our goal from the beginning has been to create a household brand name. We love seeing Blendz on new faces all over San Diego. The day we step onto the boardwalk, and every person is wearing a pair of our shades, it’ll be “mission accomplished.” Until then, we’re on the hustle.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
We started the company from a shoestring. We both pitched in $500 and have grown everything organically from there. It’s not an easy way of doing things, but it gives us a tremendous amount of pride in the work that we do and fires us up to build something great.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
Well, hopefully we’re gonna sell a bunch of sunglasses. We’ve learned some really valuable business lessons over the last three years and we have a great working partnership. So, beyond what we are doing today, the sky is the limit.

Cameron Fous, 30
Founder, Fous Alerts
fousalerts.com
Born: Eugene, Ore.
Resides: Pacific Beach

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
CAMERON FOUS: I offer live training-slash-mentoring - where I trade live on video-slash-audio audio every day for my students to watch and learn how to day-trade - called FOUStv. In addition, I have created a 14-hour online training course on how to consistently make money day-trading the stock market using a strategy I call the FOUS4.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
In 2015, we took advantage of becoming traveling day-traders for marketing. As you read this, I’m probably in Barcelona, Ibiza, Monaco or Paris. In the last seven months I day-traded abroad in Bali, Tokyo, Costa Rica, Colombia, Dominican Republic and St. Maarten, staying in some of the most amazing houses I’ve ever been. As long as you have Wi-Fi, you can day-trade from anywhere. And guess what - lifestyle marketing is tax deductible.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
Our current goals are making sure that our students take the proper and necessary steps to become successful traders. The most important thing any new trader can be doing is educating themselves. This is a profession. No different than becoming a doctor or lawyer. It takes time and hard work before you can earn the label. Without successful students, I don’t have a successful business.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
In the beginning, it was all about money and driving a cool car. But now, after having exotic cars, a boat and a nice place, I realize that, at the end of the day, none of this material stuff has any meaning. It hasn’t made me a better person nor improved the value of my life. What makes me tick is the feeling of accomplishing something I worked hard for or getting emails from students with success stories about making money with the things I taught them. I’m always searching for a new high. I get bored pretty easily and I tend to have a bad habit of buying things to fill void.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
Right now, I am in the process of launching another business in the finance industry that’s going to be a game-changer. And if we execute it properly, I think it has potential to be bigger than the company I have now. Like, I could make 100 bilzerian dollars, maybe.

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
BRIAN HAGHIGHI: The California Fruit Wine Company is the pioneer producer of all-natural wines handcrafted from fruits other than grapes. Our wines are light, refreshing, fruit-forward and surprisingly not sweet.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
We just launched two “sangrias,” blends of our fruit wines, which we made in partnership with Whole Foods -pineapple and mango sangria, and pomegranate and cherry sangria. Pick up a bottle at Whole Foods in SoCal, Arizona, Nevada or Hawaii.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
To nationally and internationally develop and own the fruit-wine category; to parlay that success into other items across the grocery aisle, leveraging our innovative form of employee ownership.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
I really enjoy the process of building something from scratch. That’s fun. Also, I am fanatical about creating efficient, sustainable systems that create positive outcomes for all stakeholders. We are a benefit corporation.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
At some point, I’d really like to go back for a PhD, possibly in Sociology. But I also anticipate continuing to be involved in entrepreneurial ventures, whether starting a new venture, being an advisor, investor or board member.

liveagreatstory.me

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
ZACH HORVATH: Live a Great Story is a medium to share inspiring stories that make a positive impact in the community.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
The most important thing is that we’re connecting with tons of local San Diego movers and shakers and sharing stories about how they’re contributing to our city’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
Our goal is to spread #liveagreatstory, share inspiring stories and build a community. All of our goals are aligned with those three priorities.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
What drives me most is the continued journey of defining, understanding and growing my personal skills so that I can use my super powers to make a difference.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
I’m going to keep spreading #liveagreatstory far and wide. I won’t stop until everyone in S.D. has a button on their shirt and a sticker on their phone!

Ariadna Jacob, 31
Founder and CEO, Influences Group, Inc.
influences.com
Born: Mexico City, Mexico
Resides: Cortez Hill

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
ARIADNA JACOB: Influences is a mobile app that matches you with videos to spark ideas and help you reach your full potential. Getting access to the world’s smartest people and the knowledge and advice they share is a common problem among Millennials. Our app solves this problem by presenting the best ideas when you need them most.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
We’re creating an algorithm that inspires and connects people on the most fundamental level. We plan to bring significant innovations in personal and professional growth, which has been lacking for the past 10 years, by highlighting influencers like Neil Degrasse Tyson and Gary Vaynerchuk; and collaborating with brand executives from Loreal, Mastercard and Nike, who are focused on producing meaningful and interesting video content.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
We spent over a year prototyping and fine-tuning our app. Instead of raising a ton of money before our app was tangible, we focused on making the product as simple as possible to get it in the App Store quickly. Our goal is to have it in your hands by the end of the summer and in millions of hands by next year. If you’d like to be a beta user, you can sign up now on our website, influences.com.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
What drives me is the untapped opportunity that lies within millions of people around the world. People are consumed by things that don’t matter - like how great someone else’s life appears on Facebook or how many likes their selfie got on Instagram. I’m driven by an urge to fight mediocrity and self-loathing. You can’t think higher than the level you’re exposed to. I feel it’s my job to help expose people to their ‘aha’ moments.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
You’ll probably see me writing a book and speaking to young entrepreneurs, especially women. I believe, if someone has helped you get to where you are, it’s your duty to help identify younger talent and be the mentor for the next generation.

Tim King, 29
Owner, Tim King Photography
timkingweddings.com
Born: Boalsburg, Pa.
Resides: North Pacific Beach

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
TIM KING: I photograph weddings in a way that helps couples remember how they felt on one of the most important days of their life. All their family and friends centered around celebrating their future. The way I think of it, I build time machines to travel back to one of the best days ever in each couple’s life.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
I’ve never loved what I do more than I do right now. I’ve developed my skills to perfection, and my client relationships are awesome. I’m shooting weddings all over the world and learning a ton about how people live their lives, which is why it’s the perfect time for me to move on - because it will never be as good as it is right now.

What accolades have you received?
Featured on NatGeo, Today Show, Huffington Post, Good Morning America.
Best airport selfie of 2012, worldwide.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
Add tremendous value to people’s lives. Help them see the awesome relationships and great times that are part of the journey, and how important it is to celebrate what we have in every aspect of our lives. Train myself to be able to document those experiences in the best possible light and anticipation.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
Joy. Love. Inspiring people to help others, make them laugh and do ridiculous things that are absolutely unnecessary but, oh, so much fun. Celebrate people’s birthdays and show them that they matter... thanks, Billy.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
My last wedding will be in summer of next year and I will gradually move on towards helping people understand the importance of animals in our lives. I plan to start an organization dedicated to understanding and utilizing the amazing power of animals to help us in our lives, specifically dogs. I have never loved wedding photography more than I do right now, but this is a far greater cause that needs my help.

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
ADAM KOVEN: If Cold Stone Creamery and Ben & Jerry’s had a love child that was a cookie company, that would be The Cravory Cookies. We’ve created over 2,000 flavors and counting.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
The Cravory Cookies is looking to expand to a second storefront location in San Diego and grow our online presence so more people all over the country can satisfy their cookie cravings.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
We strive to push the culinary envelope of what people think a traditional cookie is and can be. We want The Cravory Cookies brand to be known for making your favorite cookie.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
Witnessing someone try our cookies for the first time and seeing their reaction. When they flip out over trying something so familiar yet completely new and love it, it really pushes me to work harder.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
I will probably go grab a glass of milk, ‘cause I have a cookie tasting in a few minutes. This brand new Guava Cheesecake Cookie is calling my name. Cheers!

With our new 12-ounce Essentials line at a lower price-point, we have been able to reach a broader consumer market and expand our distribution from the natural space to conventional retailers like Costco, Target, Vons, Publix, Safeway, Kroger and Wal-Mart. This is an exciting shift in the availability of organic products at an approachable price-point for the mainstream shopper.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
To democratize organic, non-GMO, cold-pressed juice and make it accessible and affordable for everyone - not just the wealthy, high-end market shopper. Suja is designed to taste great and deliver health without the punishment so people will actually enjoy drinking juices with greens and veggies.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
Elevating the health of others and making them feel good from consuming something we’ve created. Knowing that someone picking up a processed, pasteurized smoothie, tea, or “juice drink” now has a better option next to those on the shelf is an incredible thing to see. There is no better feeling than seeing people make small changes, like drinking a Suja juice instead of a soda, that help them eat more mindfully, exercise more and treat themselves better.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
I have so many ideas about ways to innovate in the health and wellness world that I’m very excited and passionate about exploring. My blog blawnde.com and Suja have been great ways to connect with like-minded people, and I can definitely see a major need and desire for more amazing things in the wellness space.

Our brand is blowing up on social media, and sales are really picking up. We are starting to spread through word of mouth as well, which has led to some exciting collaborations with different brands around the world.

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
EILEEN LOFGREN: Child of Wild is a brand that believes objects with past lives or cultural relevance have a depth that can be felt. We specialize in unique jewelry and eclectic housewares, all in the hopes to provide clients with something worth having, something worth investing in. The response has been overwhelming.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
We are constantly traveling abroad and exploring for inspiration and inventory. We plan to launch our newly designed website in July and are developing our Spring/Summer 2017 collections.

Our jewelry and designs are seen all over Vanessa Hudgens, Shay Michelle and the young Hollywood scene.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
My main mission with Child of Wild is to bring acknowledgment to the artisans and tribes we source from. We have put pressure on the fashion industry to stop the blatant copying of cultural pieces. Because of the limitations of sourcing only authentic pieces, it has made scaling the business my biggest challenge. A huge goal for us is to supply large retailers in a sustainable, ethical and respectful way.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
There is so much beauty in this word, what drives me is to settle for nothing mundane and progressively challenge the fashion market. I have a quote I live by: “There are more things in heaven and earth... than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” I am always driven to learn things outside my perspective and hunger for creative stimulation.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
With out a doubt, I will continue on as entrepreneur. Once you have the freedoms and empowerment of creating your own thing, there is no looking back.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
I enjoy a challenge and I also get off on people telling me I can’t do something. I still remember leaving my 9-to-5 about five years ago; the CEO said don’t come running back. I didn’t. I just smiled, walked out and have never had a 9-to-5 since.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
Just continue to work hard and expand. I see the business growing every day, so I’m encouraged. We gain more followers, traffic and users with everyday that passes. Also, I’m not afraid to entering new verticals if needed; it’s fun and keeps you on your toes.

Born: Fairfax, Va.
Resides: Mission Hills

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
ADAM MOYER: I started Knockaround in 2005 because I was tired of losing more-expensive sunglasses. All of the affordable sunglasses at the time were generic gas station or swap meet shades. Enter Knockaround: affordable, design-focused sunglasses coupled with a great customer experience.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
It’s never been a more exciting time for Knockaround. We’re growing fast and have dozens of cool projects in the pipeline. In the next year, we’ll be working with some great San Diego brands, including the Padres and Green Flash Brewing Company.

What accolades have you received?
More special than any accolades are being in a position to cross things off of my bucket list - throwing out the first pitch at a Padres game, purchasing a vintage Ferrari, giving the graduation speech at my old high school. Those are the things that stand out to me.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
Knockaround is definitely still in growth mode. It’ll be a challenge, but we’ve got our sights set on $30 million in revenue within the next few years... and I think it’s attainable.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
There’s no denying it, I’m definitely driven by money and the financial freedom it provides. But I’m also driven by wanting to create an iconic and memorable brand that really resonates with our fan-base.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
I’m an entrepreneur at heart. I’m hoping to start five more companies by the time I’m 40.

It is to truly reverse the way we all interact with and experience chocolate.

Coming from a family of full-spectrum health issues, I made it my life mission to educate others on the importance of nutritional changes to better their physical and mental well-being.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.

Chris Richmond, 28
CEO, ShareTV
sharetv.com
Born: Oakland, Calif.

PacificSD: Describe (in 30-ish words) your business/service/product.
CHRIS RICHMOND: ShareTV.com is a fan site for network television used by millions of people. We tell you when the next new episode of your favorite show is, which shows were canceled, and then let you watch full-length episodes through our partnership with HULU and Showtime.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what exciting things are happening in your business right now.
More and more networks are finally giving in to putting their content online without requiring a cable subscription. HBO came out with their standalone service a few months ago, and [at the time of this interview], Showtime launched theirs today. I started ShareTV before there was a HULU or any kind of streaming service, and back then, the networks were dead-set against their content being put online. I have the legal warnings to prove it. Looks like the tides are finally turning.

What accolades have you received?
More than $100,000 received in donations on Kickstarter for one of our website projects. Seems better than an award to me.

Describe (in 30-ish words) your business goals.
Continue developing a team and platform that can eventually scale to ridiculous heights. To this point, we have bootstrapped the whole thing. Our goal is to build up as much as we can before we bring on those big investors to go to the next level. I imagine, by the end of the year, we’ll be back on the hunt for a new office space, putting up some “Help Wanted” signs and looking at another upgrade for our already impressive rack of servers.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what drives you.
I only created ShareTV because I missed an episode of my favorite show at the time, Smallville. I never imagined it would become my full-time career. Once it took off, my goal was just to have a comfortable lifestyle without a boss, alarm clock or schedule of any kind. Once I made it to the point where I didn’t have to work I realized how boring that was and decided I wanted to accomplish something great. I’m still working on that part.

Describe (in 30-ish words) what will you do next.
Build a media empire. Last year, we acquired another popular website called TV Tropes, which has more than doubled our audience. I think we have a good path and just need to keep building on it.

I fail a lot, but I’ve proven to myself that those failures always turn into valuable lessons. This really enables me to replace any fear of future failures with faith. Faith that, even if it happens, I’ll come out of it stronger.
