There’s so much more to Father’s Day than brunch

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and if you’re really trying to make your dad happy this year, think outside the box. Sure, you could go the easy way and take him out for brunch, but why not branch out and treat your dad to a couple other activities around San Diego?

Here are a handful of things to do to celebrate and spend time with your old man, sans sit-down brunch.

AleSmith Tony Gwynn 5.5K

If you and your pops love baseball, beer and being active, sign up for the AleSmith Tony Gwynn 5.5 K. The race will course through the streets of Miramar’s abundant brewery-fueled business parks on Saturday, June 17. The 5.5K will begin at 8 a.m. and will be followed by a post-race after party with a free pint (for race participants) of AleSmith .394, a beer developed in collaboration with Mr. San Diego and awesome dad Tony Gwynn before his passing. There also will be live music, local food trucks, more AleSmith beers available for purchase and a free kids fun run. Registration costs $50-$100 dependent on the package you choose. Padres tickets

Speaking of baseball, take dad out to the ball game as a Father’s Day present that’s sure to be a home run in his eyes. Grab a cold one, and root, root, root for the Padres at Petco Park. The Padres will be on the road over Father’s Day weekend, so make some late plans, score some sweet seats and hit the home games on the 23rd and 24th of June vs. the Detroit Tigers.

Father’s day concert and BBQ

Want some tunes and a beautiful view? Head out to the Hotel Del Coronado’s annual Father’s Day day BBQ on Del Beach. The event will feature drinks, food, a skydiving show and a live music from the Lt. Dan Band at 5 p.m. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 18 and supports America’s veterans and military families through the Gary Sinise Foundation. Fourth annual Father’s Day car show

If dad is a car buff, or just likes ogling a good set of wheels, take him out to Belmont Park for the Father’s Day Car Show on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 18. This event will offer tons of classic and restored cars to peruse, as well as a free chill-and-grill event at Draft on Mission Beach beforehand. There will also be a beer and brats special post-show at Draft, including a sausage plate and a craft beer for $14. For more information, visit belmontpark.com.

Go take a hike

This is one of those activities that never gets old. Deciding to step out into nature to do your favorite hike together is an awesome way to get some true, quality time in a beautiful setting. Plus, there are some pretty epic hikes in San Diego that should be taken of advantage of for Father’s Day, or anytime, really. The San Diego International Boat Show

Feeling nautical? Head out to Spanish Landing Park East on Harbor Island to celebrate Father’s Day at the San Diego International Boat Show on Thursday, June 15 through Sunday, June 18. The event is $15 for adults and offers attendees a chance to check out 140 different boat for sale, as well as gear, accessories and more.
