Lauryn Hill’s MLH Caravan tour is San Diego-bound

Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Lauryn Hill is launching a national MLH Caravan: A Diaspora Calling! Concert Series tour.

The nationwide concert trek begins Aug. 27 in Philadelphia, concludes Nov. 13 in Phoenix and includes a Nov. 1 show in San Diego at Jacobs Music Center’s Copley Symphony Hall. The tour is being jointly produced by Live Nation, which owns Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, and Tidal, the music streaming service owned by hip-hop superstar Jay-Z.

In a statement released Wednesday morning, Hill said: “The MLH Caravan allows me to continue the theme of unity and celebration of the many facets of cultural and artistic beauty throughout the African diaspora while on tour this summer and fall. In these days of tension, tumult and transition, an exchange of this kind can yield direction, expression, understanding and empowerment as well as connection, self Love and appreciation that hopefully overflows into our respective communities.”

The tour is an outgrowth of Diaspora Calling!, a 3-day music and arts festival that Hill headlined in April at Brooklyn’s King’s Theater. The lineup there featured performers from Trinidad, Nigeria, Ghana and Haiti, as well as Jamaican reggae mainstay Stephen Marley. He is the half-brother of Rohan Marley, who is the father of five of Hill’s six children.

No guests artists have been named for her upcoming tour yet, but an announcement will be made in the coming weeks.

A ticket pre-sale for Tidal members starts at 10 a.m. local time Thursday in each city on the tour. An online Live Nation and Tickemaster pre-sale is now underway and continues until 10 p.m. Thursday. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. for the San Diego show at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at ticketmaster.com and by phone at (800) 745-3000,

Tickets for the San Diego concert are priced at $47.45 to $97.45.

The challenge for the tour may be less musical than logistical. Hill is notorious for turning up late for her concerts, sometimes taking the stage as much as two or more hours after the scheduled start of her concerts. At one of her San Diego shows some years ago, she refused to go on until after the conclusion of a live televised sporting event that she was watching, according to several sources at the venue. She was more than an hour late in taking the stage.
