Kudos to Loch Raven resident Dick Shine who was awarded the Silver Beaver award at a
The Silver Beaver award is a council level service award "given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, sel- sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service". The actual medal is a silver beaver pendant suspended from a blue-and -hite ribbon worn around the neck. Silver awards are the highest awards given in Boy Scouts.
Shine, along with his wife ,Mary, have spent the last 28 years volunteering with Troop 730, a troop that serves kids with disabilities and meets at White Oak School. Shine reports that he has seen many Scoutmasters and boys come and go. Currently he is assistant Scoutmaster and advancement chair person, but he says he also serves as a shoulder to cry on and helps to keep everybody happy! There have been many success stories and happy moments associated with the troop but one of the best was when his son Ricky earned Eagle Scout in 2000.
Shine's wife also serves as an assistant Scoutmaster with the troop, and she and Ricky were on hand to see Shine receive his award.
An open house was held at the library on the evening of Thursday, March 21 to honor the artists.
