Savage Boys and Girls Club

The Savage Boys and Girls Club's U-12 Screaming Eagles just returned from a successful trip to Cooperstown, N.Y. where they participated in a week-long tournament that included 104 teams from across the country and Canada.

The Eagles earned the eighth seed going into the elimination rounds and finished the tournament with a 7-1 record. Members of the team are Brendan Collins, Morgan Crampton, Timmy Dragonette, Todd Del Tufo, Jordan Gilbey, Tyler Green, A.J. Holcomb, Cameron Hyder, Brandon Laing, Peter Mudd and Josh Olsufka.

AYRA travel

The Atholton Youth Recreation Association Athletics 11-U travel team placed second in the 19th annual Bowie Baseball Tournament July 7-8. Members of the team are Noah Alper, Phillip Carroll, Jordan Davis, Kyle Hess, Alton Machen, Matt Meissner, Patrick Sherlock, Stephen Frazier and Adrien Sims.

USTA League

The McCoy Ball Busters 4.5 men's USTA League tennis team won their flight at the Maryland District tournament last weekend and will represent Howard County at the Mid-Atlantic Sectionals Aug. 10-13 in Newport News, Va.

If the team wins that tournament, it will represent the Mid-Atlantic region at the national championships Oct. 26-28 in Tucson, Az.

Running

Centennial Fun Run

Mark Eagles, undefeated in the Centennial Fun Run this summer, led again last week. Kirsten Wikner, 12, just seconds ahead of her competition, won for the women.

With a kick at the finish, Jasmine Ives, 7, out ran her mother Shelly Kvech, the "original Fun Run girl."

Kaiden Haggerty, 8, traveled all the way from North Carolina to compete in the Fun Run and also to visit grandparents. The Nelson family came from Alaska, also to visit grandparents.

Scott McGrew of State Farm, as he has for the past dozen years, visited with random prizes and an opportunity for kids to place a simulated emergency phone call.

Sixty-five runners ran through the Swansfield community July 10 as the Howard County Striders held one-mile and 5k races there. Nathan Gears and Michelle Weaver were the one-mile leaders. Karsten Brown and Kendra Smith won the 5k race. The Reading clan brought three generations of runners to the one-miler.

Lacrosse

M&D Lacrosse

The M&D Lacrosse Club dominated the 13th annual National Draw. The Howard-County based girls lacrosse program had teams win the JV, Riser and Littlers Divisions of the tournament. The varsity division was won by the Long Island Yellow Jackets who beat M&D 2013 Black, 4-3, in the championship game.

M&D Black 2015 overcame a 3-2 halftime deficit to defeat BBl 15 Black of New Jersey, 7-4, in the junior varsity division. Local players helping M&D win the title were Lillie Miller (Long Reach), Jen Giles (Mt. Hebron), Megan Doherty (Mt. Hebron), Megan Taylor (Glenelg) and Caroline Moore (Marriotts Ridge).

M&D Black 2016 captured the Risers division. The team is composed of players who will be freshmen in high school this fall. The 2016 team defeated M&D 2017, 5-2, in the finals. Local players who contributed to the victory were Jordan Stevens (Mt. Hebron), Katie Schleuterberg (Howard), Sorana Larson (Mt. Hebron), Kelly Colegrove (Marriotts Ridge), Emma Johnson (Atholton) and Victoria LaVeck (Marriotts Ridge).

The Littlers division was won by M&D Black 2018. Midfielder Julia Hoffman (St. Augustine's) scored the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining in the championship game against the Long Island Yellow Jackets. The final score was 4-3. Other local players contributing to the victory were Erin Demek (Patapsco Middle), Sarah Ayer (Elkridge), Gloria Esdmund (Glenelg), Maddie O'Brien (Glenelg) and Shay Clevenger (Resurrection).
