Last week, in his final column for the Columbia Flier/Howard County Times, Doug Miller called on his readers to "Demand the best effort of those charged with keeping the public informed..." Thank you, Doug, for your years of giving our community your best effort.
While we are at it, let's do the same regarding our elected representatives, including me. Let's demand their best effort, as well, in dealing with today's many critical issues. Let's demand that their words and actions be in sync on issues of social justice, economic justice and environmental justice.
And then, finally, let's demand the same of each and every one of us readers to participate in our government. After all, the people are the government in a democracy, a fragile structure in need of participation from each of us.
Doug wrote, "I still have a direct stake in the uncertain future of journalism. So do you." We can say the same for the uncertain future of government.
