Tennis

Awesome Aces

The Howard County Awesome Aces junior team tennis competed in Maryland State JTT Championships held at McDonogh School July 16. The Quick Start Tennis 8-U Intermediate and 10-U Intermediate teams came in second in the state.

Members of the 8-U team are Bonnie Vess, Madeline Vasilios, Nour Eloseily, Abishay Reddy, Sion Mathew and Meera Tadmilla, all of Ellicott City; Gabriel Viaud, of Columbia, and Hannah Smith, ofCatonsville.

Members of the 10-U team are William McIntyre, William Vasilios, John Freed, Molly Eldridge and Avery Vess, all of Ellicott City; Daria Walker, of Columbia, and Revanth Biari, of Woodstock.

Running

Centennial Fun Run

With the weather just a bit better, Karsten Brown almost broke five minutes and the first nine runners were under six minutes including the first woman, Tiffany Lang. Orlando Phillips provided reggae music and everyone got to try limbo on the lawn at the July 26 Centennial Fun Run.

The final Fun Run for the summer is Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. (note earlier start) in the Centennial neighborhood. There will be a Partners' Relay, party and awards. For information visit the Strider's website or call 410-465-7735.

Softball

Riviera Beach Spirit

Howard County resident Camille Calvin, a rising senior at River Hill, plays for the Riviera Beach Spirit Gold 18-U softball team that is in California to participate in the 18-U Gold Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championship in Huntington Beach.

Calvin plays outfield and second base for the Spirit Gold. She is a switch hitter who general leads off for the squad. During the national qualifier, July 8-10, Calvin was 5 for 11 (.454) at the plate with an on-base percentage of .545. She scored seven runs and stole four bases in five attempts.

The Anne Arundel County-based travel team is one of 66 teams competing for the national championship. The teams had to qualify at 13 selected tournaments across the country.
