Softball

Western Howard County Fever

The Western Howard County Fever 16-U girls fastpitch team finished a successful season after placing ninth in the PONY National tournament in Cary, N.C. July 24-29.

With four tournament championships, including the Memorial Day Madness in Pennsylvania, the Fever finished with an impressive 57-16 record earning berths to the PONY, USSSA and ASA tournament championships.

Working through the intense heat for most of the summer tournaments, the Fever's achievements were due to outstanding hitting, pitching and defense. Already preparing for next year, the rising juniors and seniors are looking forward to another victorious season.

Lacrosse

Heros travel

The Heros 2017 had a very successful season, completing the season as they opened it with a beach tournament victory. The 2017s opened the season by capturing the Beach Lax title in Ocean City, MD, and finished the season by winning the Jersey Shore Best of the Beach Title, in Ocean City, NJ.

The team also had a successful run at the Club National Championships, held in Boyds, MD. After winning their pool, including a 10-5 victory over MandD 2017 Black, Heros moved on to the championship playoff bracket where they lost in the final to SJS Pink.

Heros 2017 finished the summer with a 32-4 record and important memories.

Twenty-six teams participated in the Howard County Striders' recent two-person relay. Each team member alternated quarter-mile laps around the track. Results:

Centennial Fun Run

Adam Wytko, the only runner under 5 minutes, won last week's Centennial Fun Run. Natalie Smolyak, in a close race, took the win for the women. Shelly "I'm still 39" Kvech took advantage of her last race before moving up to a new age group.

The Fun Run was part of the county-wide celebration of National Neighborhood Night Out with visits from the police and fire departments and local elected officials. A fire engine horn was the official start for the runners. Scott McGrew of State Farm brought the ever popular 911 simulator which allows children to practice making emergency calls.

The Fun Run ended the summer season on Aug. 9 with a Partners Relay and awards party. For additional information visit the Striders' website or call 410-465-7735.

Jump Rope

Kangaroo Kids

Twenty-five members of the Kangaroo Kids Competition Team from Howard County recently competed at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans. The event featured over 450 jumpers from 37 different jump rope teams from the United States and Canada.

In order to qualify for the Junior Olympic Games, jumpers had to place in the top ten for their age group at regional qualifiers across the country. At the Junior Olympic Games, medals were awarded for the top three places and ribbons were awarded for places four through ten for each event. In addition, overall gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in each age group for the top three individuals, pairs, Double Dutch teams and team shows. Kangaroo Kids had three overall gold medalists: David Gordon, Max Gleichauf and Mason Rogers; two overall silver medalists: Beth Short and Sam Trossman; and two overall bronze medalists: Allison Richards and Ebi Short. In the overall pairs events, Sydni Horner and Mason Rogers won an overall gold medal; Anna Lawson and Lily Trossman, Sam Trossman and Lynn Walsh and Max Gleichauf and Allison Richards all earned overall silver medals; and pairs Christina Kratzmeier and Cara Nardone received an overall bronze medal. Max Gleichauf, Allison Richards, Beth Short and Cassandra Tarash won an overall gold medal for Double Dutch and Cecilia Hartley, Mason Rogers, Sam Trossman and Lynn Walsh earned an overall silver. Both the Junior Team and the Senior Team won the gold medal for team show.

Kangaroo Kids set new Junior Olympic records in three events: Beth Short and Cassandra Tarash in Pairs Speed; Sam Trossman and Lynn Walsh in Pairs Power and the Double Dutch team of Cecilia Hartley, Mason Rogers, Sam Trossman and Lynn Walsh in the 4x30 Speed Relay.

Mason Rogers was awarded the Joel Ferrell Outstanding Performance Award for Jump Rope. This award is presented to one male and female each year and recognizes the outstanding athletic performance at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, as well as sportsmanship. Mason is the ninth Kangaroo Kid Jumper to receive this award since 1996.
