Are you ready for some football? Super Bowl Sunday falls on Feb. 5 and if you do not yet have plans for this de facto American holiday, the St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Knights of Columbus invite you to attend their annual Super Bowl Party and Chili Cook-Off that evening. Whether you think you make the best chili this side of the county line or simply love to eat it, you can help determine this year's "Chili Bowl Champ."
Of course, other food and beverages will be available, too, and admission is free. The party will begin at 5 p.m. in the church basement (10800 Old Court Road, in Woodstock) and run until the game concludes. Admission is free.

What does "round" mean to you? At least one dictionary catalogs nearly 50 definitions of the word — a truly mind-boggling number — so artists should have plenty of room to interpret roundness in nature. The Howard County Conservancy would love to display these visions during the third annual juried art show and auction, titled "Art and the Art of Stewardship – All Things Round," scheduled for March 10 – April 19.
The show, which is themed in appreciation of the 15th anniversary of Baltimore's American Visionary Art Museum, is open to all original two-dimensional art and photography media, as well as outdoor sculpture. Three judges – Rebecca Hoffberger, founder and director of the American Visionary Art Museum; Greg Mort, internationally acclaimed artist; and Anne Raver, a New York Times contributor — will assess the entries for acceptance and awards based on their expression of nature's ever-present roundness and how they affect and inspire both nature and humankind.

The theme of roundness in nature seems to segue well into a reminder about the citrus fruit fundraiser for the Marriotts Ridge Music Foundation. The deadline for the final order this season is Feb. 6, so make sure to stock up on fresh, juicy – and yes, round – oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines while you can.
Last week, I wrote about the upcoming community-wide Eco-Fest Carnival, a collaborative effort between Mt. View Middle School and Marriotts Ridge High School, and this week I would like to share some updated information.
First, the event will take place at the high school Feb. 11 from 1to 4 p.m., not 1-3 p.m., as mentioned previously.
Second, the event coordinators are seeking a variety of donations. In addition to the cardboard items listed last week (empty egg cartons and paper tubes, plus flattened cereal boxes), they also need cakes for a cake walk and books for an elementary and middle school book swap. Just as importantly, the event requires sponsors and volunteers.
Finally, attendees can purchase tickets at the event for 25 cents each or order them in advance online at greenmvms.weebly.com. The discounted cost through the website is $10 for 45 tickets. Remember – this event is designed to be both informational and fun for the whole family, with crafts, games and prizes for the younger set.
Amy Syversen, the band teacher at West Friendship Elementary School, would like to commend her January Musicians of the Month for their hard work and great attitudes.
