City of Laurel to remember 15th anniversary of Sept. 11

September is National Preparedness Month and the city of Laurel plans to recognize the national ready.gov weekly preparedness themes, along with its own tributes and services to honor the 15th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists attacks and those who lost their lives.

City officials said this year's theme, "Don't Wait, Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today," will discuss the importance of emergency preparation and necessary precautions to stay safe. Over five weeks, the theme will be broken down into specific aspects, including Promote National Preparedness Month from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3; Preparing Family and Friends from Sept. 4 to 10; Preparing Through Service from Sept. 11 to 17; Individual Preparedness from Sept 18 to 24; and Lead-up to National PrepareAthon Day from Sept. 25 to 30.

All events will lead up to the unveiling by Mayor Craig Moe and city council members of a new 9/11 monument at 5 p.m. during an interfaith service outside the Laurel Municipal Center, 8103 Sandy Spring Road. The monument will be made from a piece of steel from the World Trade Center that the city has previously displayed in the Municipal Center.
