The Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 8185 enjoyed a covered dish dinner prior to their regular monthly meeting on Dec. 21 at the post home.

The members of the VFW Post 8185 enjoyed their annual Christmas Eve Party at the post home, 520 Susquehanna River Road, with the added bonus of the Ravens game on all the TVs.

For at least the past 60 years, the Port Deposit Lions Club has sponsored the annual Carol Sing in Port's Town Square each Christmas Eve. Rev. George Hipkins accompanies the singers each year – originally on his accordion and lately with my husband's Yamaha keyboard. And for the past five years or so, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Water Witch Fire Company has provided hot chocolate and homemade cookies to the sometimes chilly (and sometimes freezing) assemblage. Last Saturday evening, after the crowd gathered at 7 p.m., Rev. Hipkins played several carols and his wife, Nellie, led the singing. Then, Kim Flayhart, former First Lady of Port, read the classic poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." After more singing, Santa arrived via Water Witch Fire Truck and then presents were distributed to all kids present. Thanks to Lions Dermott, Hipkins and Bitner; former mayor and wife, Rob and Kim Flayhart, current Mayor Wayne Tome; WWFC Ladies Auxiliary president Stephanie Gibson and her gang – Syndy Bare, Nellie Hipkins and Ann Delp; and Donnie Poist from the WWFC.

During the Christmas Eve "sing" I bumped into one of my old friends from high school, Leonore Hipkins Froeschle, as she was visiting her folks (George and Nellie Hipkins) for the holidays. Leonore also visited her son, Sam, in New York City before returning to her home in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Happy Birthday to Shelby Bitner Bowser, Rising Sun, as she celebrated her Christmas Eve birthday last weekend.
