It is celebration time at two of our area pre-schools! Actually, Ascension Lutheran Nursery School and Kindergarten commemorated 50 years on Sunday, April 28 at its 11 a.m. service. The school children sang at the service and their voices raised in song certainly made it a joyous occasion. "It was a wonderful celebration," said Kati Ball, director of the Ascension Nursery School and Kindergarten. After the service, there was a festive luncheon with a Parade of Cakes — one for each decade. The children counted each one of the 50 candles! County Councilman
On May 24, Brown Memorial Weekday School will also observe 50 years. Past teachers, directors, parents and students have been invited for this gala event. Kim Cashman, a former student and parent was bubbling over with enthusiasm as she recounted the tremendous excitement that this event has generated. "We will have the children's art work displayed throughout the school for all to admire and then return to the Hall for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, a few words from Mary Ellen Thomsen, one of the founding members, and, our current director, Allison Bond, along with a few others," she said. Not only does Kim love the school but she said, "It is very special to our family. Another church, Central Presbyterian, is holding the final concert of its Sundays at Central Concert Series on May 12. The Central Chancel and Choir will perform Brahms German Requiem. However, as Ruth Williams explained, the performance will be very atypical. Central's rendition is the rarely performed choir with piano-four hands version that Brahms personally prepared for a premier in London, June 15 1871. The German Requiem will be sung in English just as it was for the 1871 performance.
The carnival is coming to town! The annual St. Pius X carnival on May 17, 18 and 19, that is! Great rides, fun games and tasty food await you. In addition, a bake table, special booths for books, clothes and other collectibles will dot the carnival grounds. Surprises, excitement and a jolly good time are in store for all carnivalgoers. Forgers, June 8 is THE DAY – The Rodgers Forge Picnic. Plan now to gather your family and neighbors for this yearly party. According to Dave Crockett, there is quite a line up: a "DJ", picnic food, watermelon eating contest, sack races, pony rides, Bounce Houses, face painting and lots, lots more. REMEMBER: The Picnic is at the Tot Lot, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
