Poway City Council election filing deadline is Friday

A handful of potential City Council candidates are collecting signatures on their nomination papers in time to be turned in by the 5 p.m. Friday deadline.

City Clerk Nancy Neufeld said Tuesday afternoon that five candidates, including Mayor Steve Vaus and Councilmen John Mullin and Dave Grosch, have turned in their papers and have had their submitted signatures of between 20 and 30 registered city voters verified by the county Registrar of Voters.

In the race for mayor, challenger Yuri Bohlen has turned his signatures in and was waiting for verification. Potential challengers Brian Edmonston and Emily Johnson were still gathering the required signatures.

So far, Grosch, running for reelection in the newly created District 1, is being challenged by Peter J. Neild, whose signatures have been verified. John Carson has submitted his signatures for verification while Jonathan Ryan was still collecting signatures as of Tuesday. A potential new challenger, Derrick J. Benson, filed a candidacy form but had not taken out nomination papers, according to Neufeld. Benson, a Birch Tree Lane resident, works for the Federal Aviation Administration. He was an unsuccessful June applicant for the seat vacated by Councilman Jim Cunningham.

Mullin is running for reelection in District 3. Ann-o-Reno Lane resident Tony Russo on Monday filed a notice of candidacy, but had not taken out nomination papers as of Tuesday afternoon.

Four potential candidates for a two-year, citywide seat were collecting signatures this week. They include appointed incumbent Caylin Frank and challengers Torrey Powers, Randall Young and Chris Olps. Olps took his papers out on Monday. Olps is a Scarboro Street resident and is employed by SAIC. A frequent speaker at council meetings, he has twice run unsuccessfully for a council seat and was a July applicant for Cunningham’s seat.
