Local prep football alums ready for college bowl season

The 42-game college football season has already kicked off.

And if you’ve watched closely or focus your attention on the upcoming games, you may see some of the 52 players from San Diego on bowl rosters.

Three players who will be in the spotlight are kickers Jake Bailey (Santa Fe Christian) of Stanford, Jack Mitchell (Torrey Pines) of Northwestern and Matt Boermeester (Cathedral Catholic) of USC.

Stanford plays North Carolina in the Dec. 30 Sun Bowl. Bailey is the punter and handles kickoffs for the Cardinal. He averages 42.8 yards on 45 punts with a long of 61 and 10 punts of 50 or more yards. He has dropped 19 punts inside the 20. Bailey, a sophomore All-Pac-12 pick, has handled 64 kickoffs with 38 touchbacks.

Northwestern plays Pitt on Dec. 28 in the Pinstripe Bowl. Mitchell, who also plays baseball for the Wildcats, has made 7 of 11 field goals and 38 of 39 PATs. Of his 59 kickoffs, 31 have been touchbacks. A senior, Mitchell has made 39 of 56 field-goal tries and 90 of 95 PATs. He had four field goals against Notre Dame and three against Nebraska and had a game-winner against Penn State.

USC plays Penn State on Jan. 2 in the Rose Bowl. Boermeester, a junior, has connected on 15 of 20 field-goal tries with a long of 49 and 48 of 49 PATs. He has 77 kickoffs with 40 touchbacks. Boermeester is USC’s leading scorer with 93 points.

Here are some of the other players in bowl games:

Senior TE Taylor McNamara (Westview) has started 10 games for USC with 12 catches for 111 yards and a TD.

Including Bailey, Stanford has seven local players on its roster. DB Frank Buncom (St. Augustine) has 16 tackles and an interception. LB Jordan Perez (Carlsbad) has 26 tackles. DB Quenton Meeks (Del Norte) has 19 tackles and a pair of interceptions while LB Casey Toohill (Cathedral Catholic) has 22 tackles and 21/2 sacks. DB Alijah Holder (Oceanside) was a starter before he injured his shoulder. PK Collin Riccitelli (Carlsbad) is redshirting.

Erik Magnuson (La Costa Canyon) is the starting RT at Michigan, which will play Florida State on Dec. 30 in the Orange Bowl. A senior, Magnuson has played in 45 games with 36 starts, 24 of those the last two years.

Alex Kelley (Vista) is the starting center at Colorado, which plays Oklahoma State on Dec. 29 in the Alamo Bowl. Kelley has played in 49 games for the Buffs, starting the last 37.

Tim Patrick (University City/Grossmont College) leads Utah with 43 receptions for 684 yards and five TDs. LB Christian Drews (Ramona) has played all 12 games for the Utes, who play Indiana on Dec.28 in the Foster Farms Bowl.

Mario Yakoo (Steele Canyon) is the starting RT for Boise State which plays Baylor on Dec. 27 in the Cactus Bowl. NT David Moa (Kearny) has 27 tackles, 71/2 sacks and 81/2 tackles for losses. MLB Tyson Maeva (Cathedral Catholic), a freshman, has 15 tackles.

Kiel Robinson (Mission Hills), a junior LB at Colorado State, has 24 tackles for the Rams, who play Idaho on Tuesday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. WR Robert Ruiz (Valhalla) has 24 catches for 315 yards and three TDs.

Michael Garner (Madison), a freshman WR at Idaho, has played in 11 games with one catch.

Sergio Bailey (Olympian/Grossmont College) is the leading receiver at Eastern Michigan, which plays Old Dominion on Friday in the Bahamas Bowl. He has 55 catches for 799 yards and six TDs. Senior TE Sam Browning (Escondido/Palomar College) has 11 receptions for 99 yards.

Ray Smith (Carlsbad), a sophomore DT, has 23 tackles for Boston College, which plays Maryland on Monday in the Quick Lane Bowl.

Jordan Miller (Oceanside) and Jake Wambaugh (Point Loma) are sophomore DBs at Washington, which plays Alabama in the Dec. 31 Peach Bowl. Miller has seven tackles and an interception while Wambaugh has seven tackles.

Shayne Davern (La Costa Canyon) is a senior RB at Air Force, which plays South Alabama on Dec. 30 in the Arizona Bowl. He has 116 carries for 475 yards and four TDs with four receptions for 69 yards.

Daniel Walsh (Cathedral Catholic), a junior WR, has 14 catches for 157 yards for TCU, which plays Georgia on Dec. 30 in the Liberty Bowl.

Bryce Fitzner (Francis Parker) is the No. 2 RG for Kansas State, which plays Texas A&M on Dec. 28 in the Texas Bowl.

Washington State, which plays Minnesota in Tuesday’s Holiday Bowl, has several local players, including Eduardo Middleton (Oceanside), who starts at RG, and Cedric Bigge-Duren (Oceanside), No. 2 at LT.

Chris Carter (Imperial) is the backup QB for Army, which plays North Texas in Tuesday’s Heart of Texas Bowl. Jordan Smith (Oceanside), a senior DL, has four tackles for Army as does freshman DL Amadeo West (Oceanside).

Sean Dowling (Fallbrook), a senior TE at Vanderbilt, has played in all 12 games with four starts. The Commodores play North Carolina State in the Dec. 26 Independence Bowl.

Daniel Henry (La Jolla Country Day) had five tackles in New Mexico’s 23-20 New Mexico Bowl win over Texas-San Antonio. Henry finished the season as the Lobos’ No. 2 tackler with 65.
