Ex-Titan gets first MLB hit during first at-bat

The moment Austin Wynns had dreamed about since he was just 6 years old turned out to be the magical moment he thought it would be.

Every boy grows up wishing to get his first major league base hit in front of his entire family or he hit the game-winning home run in the seventh game of the World Series while just playing catch in the backyard.

Wynns is no different. He ached to reach the big leagues.

Now 27, the former Poway High catcher’s resume now includes the tag “major leaguer.’’

“That was so cool,’’ he said. “I hit it and ran. I didn’t know where it was. In that case, you just run hard. I was booking it, for me, when I heard someone say it was gone.’’

Heading into a three-game series at home this week against the Boston Red Sox, his first time in Camden Yard as an Oriole, Wynns is batting .222 with the homer and his first RBI for a team in the basement of the American League East with a 19-45 record.

“Every day is unreal,’’ Wynns said. “I go to the park and take care of my business. You have to be ready for that moment on a daily basis when they call on you.

“I’ve tried to remember for a long time that I’m playing a game, so keep it simple and just play.’’

Wynns was batting .257 with four homers and 16 RBIs with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides of the International League when he got the call up to “The Show’’ as the players call it.

In 32 games this year, he had just two errors.

“I’m speechless every day,’’ Wynns said. “I maintain a poker face on the outside. The goal of every player is to slow the game down, don’t let it overwhelm you. The norm at this level is to fight to stay at this level and you can’t do that if you let the game overwhelm you.’’

Except when you get that first major-league hit.
