Matt Deskovick wins Banning steer wrestling contest; Fred Hight places fourth

Matt Deskovick won the steer wrestling competition at the Stagecoach Days Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rodeo in Banning.

The Ramona cowboy had a time of 6.1 seconds on his run to win first place and $771. Castro Valley cowboy Ory James Lemmons had the second-place time of 6.7 seconds.

“It’s about time,” Deskovick said of winning a rodeo this year.

Deskovick placed second in the Jurupa Valley Pro Rodeo in June but had not previously won a rodeo in 2017.

“I’ve drawn a lot of bad steers this year,” he said.

The Honeycutt Rodeo stock Deskovick drew at Banning provided better results.

“He was all right, good enough to win it,” Deskovick said.

Deskovick rode Booger Red at Banning. Taite Strickler of San Luis Obispo was Deskovick’s hazer who guided the steer.

“That steer came left real hardwins and my horse worked really good and I got around him,” Deskovick said. “Worked out pretty good, I guess.”

Holding the lead on the Saturday of the Friday through Sunday rodeo meant that Deskovick’s time needed to hold up against the cowboys who competed later.

“I didn’t think I was going to win it,” he said.

The Sunday bulldoggers failed to match Deskovick’s time. Ramona cowboy Fred Hight took fourth place with a run of 8.9 seconds, which added $193 to Hight’s earnings.

Deskovick also planned to compete in the Poway Rodeo, the Industry Hills Charity Pro Rodeo in Industry, and the Sheriff’s PRCA Rodeo in San Bernardino.
