Republican women start new season with fundraiser

Share

Intermountain Republican Women Federated will start the 2017-18 year with a fundraiser dinner meeting at Hatfield Creek Winery on Monday, Sept. 25. Reservations are requested by Sept. 19.

Recommended check-in and social time will be 5:15 p.m. and the meeting will start at 5:45. Cost is $20 per person. Members, spouses and guests from Ramona, Julian, Santa Ysabel and surrounding areas are welcome. The winery is at 1625 Highway 78.

The meeting will feature two speakers: Dr. James Veltmeyer, one of the region’s leading physicians, and Eric Golub, an author, public speaker and politically conservative comedian.

A graduate of University of California San Diego and the Ross University School of Medicine, Veltmeyer completed his residency through the UC San Francisco system and is chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. In 2012, 2014 and 2016, his colleagues in the San Diego County Medical Society selected him the Top Medical Doctor in San Diego and he consistently ranks in the top 1 to 2 percent for patient satisfaction.

Born in South America, his family became homeless when his father abandoned his mother and siblings. His mother sent him and his brother to live with an aunt in the United States. After a two-year struggle — and six rejections — to obtain a visa, the dream of coming to America became real and brothers arrived in El Cajon. When Veltmeyer was 18, his mother followed and he became the sole provider for his family, working multiple jobs while attending school full time, working hard and excelling academically at schools like Grossmont High, while learning a new language.

He has a deep interest in the public policy issues that concern the U.S., especially in the area of health care, where he is the author of a reform plan called The Medical Association Membership. He and his wife Laura have two children, ages 7 and 5. In 2016, he was a candidate for Congress in the 53rd District.
