Throwback Thursday: Church house sells in Santa Monica

The Santa Monica church-turned-house that was featured in this space on Oct. 9 has sold for $3.1 million, or 3.5% above its $2.995-million asking price.

The more than a century-old building got its start as a house of worship for the Methodist Episcopal Church, renamed First United Methodist Church, and later was used by the Women’s Relief Corps as its Patriotic Hall.

Seller Anne Troutman, a former professor of architecture at SCI-Arc and a visual artist, and Aleks Instanbullu Architects restored and preserved the landmark structure as loft living space. Such classic American Gothic architectural details as the pointed arch windows and steep gables remain.

Two-story living and dining areas sit under cathedral ceilings. There are nearly floor-to-ceiling bookcases, a reading nook, a den, three bedrooms, three remodeled bathrooms and an updated kitchen.

A hot tub is in backyard of the 6,500-square-foot lot.

The property previously sold for $1.35 million.
