Lucy Lawless pays tribute to her "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" co-star Andy Whitfield in a touching message made by Starz to air during Friday's airing of the "Stand Up To Cancer" telecast.
Starz and its sister network, Encore, are among the many networks broadcasting the special beginning at 7 p.m. CT Friday.
Whitfield, who played Spartacus in the first season of the Starz series, lost his battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma Sept. 11, 2011. The clip features footage from the documentary "Be Here Now," a documentary in which Whitfield and his family share his struggle with the disease.
"We must stand united against this awful, devastating disease, a lesson the cast and crew of 'Spartacus' learned when we lost a dearly loved friend far too early in his life," Lawless says in the PSA. "Andy Whitfield was a true champion. An amazing man, Andy gave his all to every aspect of his life and it was an honor to know him."
She goes on to talk about the documentary: "As the title implies, Andy's uplifting story is about how important it is to live in the present and not fear the unknown. It's a beautiful life lesson for everyone to aspire to."
