"The Dark Tower," premiering at 9 p.m. CT Feb. 8 on Syfy, gave the actresses a chance to act opposite each other again. In the episode, Morgana (McGrath) kidnaps her one-time servant, now Queen Guinivere (Coulby), in order to draw King Arthur (Bradley James) into a reckless rescue attempt. Morgana covets the throne of Camelot, and will do whatever it takes to get it.
"We've always said we wanted to work more together, and finally they've given us the chance," Coulby said. "With the entire change in the dynamics of the Gwen-Morgana relationship now being opposing forces, it's made working together that much more exciting."
Morgana locks Gwen in the Dark Tower, a place that haunts the dreams of men. As they try to save Gwen, Arthur, Merlin (Colin Morgan) and the Knights of the Round Table come upon hidden dangers and magical beings. And Merlin knows that these obstacles are just the beginning of Morgana's twisted game. The final test that awaits them in the Dark Tower will be much worse.
McGrath said the actresses' reunion topped anything that came in previous seasons--because of the hatred their characters have for each other.
"These new scenes have been our best scenes of the whole five years," McGrath said. "We're no longer ward to the king and her maid, we're no longer the friends we were. There's an adversarial aspect to it all now. That's made for some real, meaty scenes for us. It's great."
