With a huge smile and playful attitude, "Call Me Maybe" singer Carly Rae Jepsen took the stage Thursday at Charter One Pavilion (as part of Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts Crazy Good Summer Concert series) to a crowd of screaming fans belting out the lyrics stuck in everyone’s heads this summer.
“Hey I just met you/And this is crazy/But here’s my number/So call me, maybe?”
As the No. 1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for the past six weeks, “Call Me Maybe” has officially been dubbed the song of summer 2012 and has launched Jepsen--with her tiny frame, big, blue eyes and girlish giggle--to international superstardom.
RedEye caught up with the Canadian artist, 26, backstage to find out about her wild rise to fame, her first full-length album scheduled for release in September and if the guy from “Call Me Maybe” ever actually called.
This has been a wild and crazy year for you. What has been your most surreal moment so far?
I would have to say Mexico City took the cake. I was playing a show there with Justin Bieber and there were 300,000 people in the audience, which is A LOT of people. [Giggles] But every day does feel like a moment where I could pinch myself. I's all so good.
Have you ever been to Chicago before, or is this your first time here?
I have been to Chicago, but I haven't properly explored it yet. It's been like, here for a day and then gone the next. This visit is a little bit the same as that actually, but hopefully I can come and do a satisfying week here and really take in the city.
You're obviously not a one-hit wonder; your new song "Good Time" with Owl City is already getting a lot of attention. However, what is your favorite one-hit wonder of all time?
[Laughs] Oh my gosh, that's a funny question. I haven't really thought about it to be honest. What would you say is yours?
I think some "Ice, Ice Baby" is always good.
[More giggles] I agree with you then.
I'm sure you've seen all of these spoofs and covers of "Call Me Maybe," especially Cookie Monster. What Cookie Monster song would you want to cover, and how would you put your own spin on it?
I'm not too familiar with his material, but I am a big fan.
Maybe some "C is for Cookie," Carly Rae Jepsen-style? "C is for Carly"?
No, so cute. Oh my gosh, should we totally do that?
I think so!
I actually love that idea.
Your first full-length album is coming out in September. Can you tell us a little bit about that? I've heard about a collaboration with LMFAO?
Yeah, actually. I look back on how the whole CD was made and the people that I met along the way and I don't think I could have had that happen twice. It has a lot to do with timing and fate. Like I met Redfoo at the airport. I was getting kind of mobbed and his security men and him came over and saved me, and that's how we met. Then we wrote a song together because we really hit it off. Him, Matthew Koma, Dallas Austin, Toby Gad, who else … there's definitely people I'm forgetting—Cory Enemy. I've been very lucky with the people that have taken interest in the project and the collaborations we've made together I feel really excited about.
Are you guys just finishing and wrapping it up? Almost ready to go?
Yeah, actually today while I was getting ready to come here I did my first real listen-through and I'm really, really excited. I think there's a couple songs here and there that we have to tie up some loose ends, but we're in the homestretch.
What song are you most looking forward to getting out there and sharing?
There's a song called "This Kiss" that I think I'm looking forward to sharing the most.
You're definitely bringing the bang trend back in for summer. You actually inspired mine! Do you have any other beauty tips and tricks for summer?
I can't really say that I do. I'm still enjoying discovering more designers and getting to play dress-up in a bigger way than I ever have before. I'm new to this world, but I'm enjoying it very much.
You're lucky you aren't here on one of our extremely hot, horrible days. It's been in the 100s like crazy.
Well we're from Canada, so I don't mind. [Giggles] It's a nice change.
