With only two episodes left in the third season of "Sanctuary," Damian Kindler and Martin Wood are showing us a Helen Magnus and Will Zimmerman we've never seen before.
"It's a rather unexpected view of these two people," Amanda Tapping told me earlier in the season. "Magnus is much more vulnerable and kind of freaked out than you've ever seen her."
"Out of the Blue" (9 p.m. June 13, Syfy; *** out of four), like many of the best "Sanctuary" episodes, focuses mostly on Helen (Amanda Tapping) and Will (Robin Dunne), who are feuding neighbors on a tree-lined suburban street.
Unlike in past two-handers such as "Next Tuesday" and "Requiem," other characters appear in the story and also are used in unexpected ways. Abby (Pascal Hutton) is the dutiful wife of Will, who is a successful cardiologist. Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl) is the mayor who has a past with Helen, a successful artist.
Welcome to topsy-turvy land.
"It's like many episodes of ‘Sanctuary,'" Dunne told me. "[It's] kind of unrecognizable … I think you could say that the characters themselves--Will and Magnus--don't even recognize themselves.
"[It was] odd in a way because you're playing the same character but in a completely different realm."
To film the episode, which was written by Kindler and directed by Wood, the cast and crew used a lush street of homes for location shooting, and filmed with a different lighting style than before.
"Everything looks like a totally different show," Dunne said, "and it was very interesting to shoot. It was exciting."
The ending of "Out of the Blue" plants the seed for all the action in next week's Season 3 finale, "Into the Black," which Tapping says ties back to the Hollow Earth storyline from earlier in the season.
