Given the option, every woman wants to look fashionable.
I'm not talking about trendy. Trendy is the look that comes, then goes before we can recoup our investment.
Fashionable is stylish, polished, modern but definitely not throw-out-everything-in-your-closet-and-start-over.
So for all of us, there's great news on the fashion front this fall. Classic is in. Wearable is in. For women slogging through the recession (who isn't?), this means we can perk up what's already in our closet by adding just a strategic piece or two for an instant, timeless update.
"It's about creating a wardrobe that's comforting and familiar — functional pieces she's going to have forever," says Gregg Andrews, a fashion director at Nordstrom.
As the fall merchandise arrives in stores, you'll be seeing an emphasis on the feminine — lacey clothes in soft colors — designed to be mixed with harder-edged, military-inspired looks in sage and olive. There will be lots of gray and camel to be worn together or to give a fresh look to your denim and black basics.
When you're shopping for that one thing (or two or three) that will make you feel special, I've created a checklist below of a dozen enduring purchases to think about once summer fades.
And to get you in the mood, I gathered some examples in
. Although a few of these items are pretty pricey, frugal shoppers will use them as a style guide in the hunt for these looks at budget prices.
Here's a quick list of must-haves:
1. Oversize knit sweaters and knit coats
that look handmade
, especially lace-ups, in every style and description — from ankle to over-the-knee — with and without heels
3. Textured legwear —
patterned, crocheted, in muted shades of brown
where the fabric and seaming are the interest, not jewels and other embellishments
in classic ivory or ballet pink, perhaps a blouse
6. Fur and leather
, faux or real, in accessories or trim on sweaters and jackets
7. Animal print
in natural colors but used as an accent, not head to toe
8. Ladylike pointy toe pumps
(not towering heels), plain or with a little bow detail
9. Statement jewelry
, just one piece, and those big button earrings are always in style
10. Anything gray or camel
, woven one-shade pattern, maybe shot through with metallic in a jacket or skirt
12. Gray sweatshirt material
but in more tailored tops and bottoms — definitely not the sweatpants and hoodies of the past
