Local students earn college honors and degrees

Elyssa Reyes of Poway was named to the Cedarville University Dean’s List for fall 2017. This recognition requires the student to have a 3.5 GPA or higher for the semester and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours. The Baptist university is in Cedarville, Ohio.

Several locals are among the 1,988 students who have made the Dean’s List at Azusa Pacific University, honored for a fall 2017 grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

The students are Linnea Bell of ZIP code 92128, a nursing major; Rebecca Lee of ZIP code 92128, a computer information systems major; Jacob Meyer of Poway, a commercial music major; David Rothweil of Poway, a business marketing major; and Irina Silverman of Poway, a nursing major.

Azusa Pacific University is an evangelical Christian university in Azusa, California.

Jessica Wagner of the Rancho Bernardo area was named to the Merrimack College Dean’s List for fall 2017. It is one of two Catholic Augustinian colleges in the U.S., located in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Sierra Ducey of Poway was named to the Emerson College Dean’s List for the fall 2017 semester. Ducey is majoring in marketing communications. The requirement to make Emerson’s Dean’s List is a grade point average of 3.7 or higher. The campus is in Boston.

Two locals were among the approximate 3,100 undergraduate and graduate students who received degrees during the Georgia Institute of Technology’s 254th commencement exercises in December. Georgia Tech is in Atlanta.

William Slaughter of the Rancho Bernardo area earned a Master of Science in mechanical engineering. Michael Walton of Poway earned a Master of Science in computer science.

David Deng of Poway was named to the fall 2017 Dean’s List at UMass Dartmouth. The list recognizes students who earned a semester GPA of 3.2 or higher of a possible 4.0. The campus is in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Noopur Mehta of the Rancho Bernardo area was named to the Hofstra University Dean’s List for the fall 2017 semester. To qualify, students must achieve a GPA of at least 3.5. Hofstra University is in Hempstead, New York.

Sadie Pratt of Poway was among 32 students in the Cornell College Steel Drum Ensemble to perform on tour across the upper Midwest in early February. The ensemble consists of four groups: The Steel Drum Ensemble is made up of four groups: Panarchy, Pandemonium, Calypso Horns and the Calypso Singers. The groups play a wide array of music, including traditional calypso, contemporary rock, jazz and orchestral works.

Cornell’s steel drum program and its bands have toured extensively throughout the U.S. and internationally. Cornell College is in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

The University of Alabama has awarded academic honors to several local students for the fall 2017 semester. A total of 12,594 students were named to the Dean’s List with an academic record of 3.5 or above or the President’s List with an academic record of 4.0 (all As). The UA Dean’s and President’s lists recognize full-time undergraduate students. The lists do not apply to graduate students or undergraduate students who take less than a full course load. The campus is in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Joshua Cobb of Poway is among December 2017 graduates at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. Cobb graduated with a Bachelor of Science in public administration.

Makenna Grewe of ZIP code 92127 has been named to the University of Iowa’s Dean’s List for the 2017 fall semester. Students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Approximately 5,000 students were honored. The campus is in Iowa City, Iowa.

Poway resident Chris Oh, a biology major, and Rancho Bernardo area resident Amy Kuptz, an early childhood education major, received academic honors for the fall 2017 semester at Miami University. The campus is in Oxford, Ohio.

Delanie Harrington of Poway made the University of Dayton fall 2017 Dean’s List, which honors undergraduate students achieving a minimum 3.5 GPA for the semester. The University of Dayton is a Catholic research institution in Dayton, Ohio.

Malina Lim of the Rancho Bernardo area is a second-year medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Lim recently helped to plan and organize the campus’ annual International Luncheon and Cultural Explosion Fashion Show with the school’s student-run Diversity Task Force. Lim modeled clothing from Thailand.

Aleksander Mansouri of the Rancho Bernardo area has been named to the University of Delaware’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2017 semester. To be eligible, a student must be enrolled full-time and earn a GPA of 3.33 or above (on a 4.0 scale). The campus is in Newark, Delaware.

Alexa Querin of Poway and acting major was named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2017 semester at Baldwin Wallace University. Students who receive at least a 3.6 GPA for seven or more graded hours in a single semester are named to the Dean’s List. Baldwin Wallace University is in Berea, Ohio.

During the fall semester, Querin was also cast in the university’s production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town.” She played the part of Rebecca Gibbs.

San Diego resident Kara Bokamper of ZIP code 92128 was named to the fall 2017 honor roll at Spokane Community College. To receive honor roll status, students must be full time (12 credits or more) and earn a 3.0 grade point average or higher. SCC’s main campus is in Spokane, Washington.

Daisy Romero of Poway was among the approximately 1,300 who received degrees in December from Azusa Pacific University. Romero earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical studies. The evangelical Christian university is in Azusa, California.

Duncan Copeland of the Rancho Bernardo area has been named to the 2017 fall semester Dean’s List at Ohio Wesleyan University. To earn Dean’s List recognition, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale in all applicable classes. The campus is in Delaware, Ohio.

Tabatha Boretto of Poway was named to the University of La Verne Deans’ List for the fall 2017 semester. Boretto earned a 4.0 grade point average and is studying criminology/law. The university is in La Verne, California.

Madison Bowen of Poway, a sophomore radiography major at York College of Pennsylvania, has been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2017 semester. To be eligible, a student must be registered for at least 12 academic credit hours and earn a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher. York College is located in York, Pennsylvania.

Students who have made the Scholastic Honor Roll for the fall 2017 term have been announced by Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. There were 1,427 students who earned straight-A (4.0) honors. Another 4,483 earned a B-plus (3.5) or better to make the listing. To be listed, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work.

Poway students who earned a 3.5 or higher GPA were Haleigh M. Brown, a senior studying biohealth sciences; Jordan A. Choukair, a junior studying digital communication arts; and Madison H. Lerner, a freshman studying zoology.

Poway residents Anna Vaus and Audrey Voggenthaler were among students named to the Fall 2017 Dean’s List at Belmont University. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C. Approximately 35 percent of Belmont’s 8,080 students qualified. Belmont University is in Nashville, Tennessee.

Kelsey L. Cloyd of Poway was among the more than 1,300 Fall 2017 degree candidates at the University of Kansas, as announced by the University Registrar. Degrees were officially conferred in January. Cloyd was working toward a Master of Arts in Museum Studies.

Graduates will have the option of participating in KU’s annual commencement ceremony on May 13 at the Lawrence, Kansas campus.
