Poway FFA members earn first-place wins at competition

The Poway Future Farmers of America saw success at the Best Informed Greenhand and Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives competitions, held at Valley Center High School on Jan. 24.

The Poway FFA’s marketing team won first place at the Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives Competition, with Poway High’s Luke Scannell winning first place individual, Jordyn Callahan fourth place individual and Jessica Lopez fifth place individual. Heather Pearson and Sierra Perkes were also part of the first-place winning team.

The marketing team will now participate in the State Marketing Plan competition at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in May. This will require team members to develop a full marketing plan for a local business and present it to a group of judges, according to a press release.

The Best Informed Greenhand competition is for freshmen in FFA. Competing in that event were Hannah Haggerty, Riya Agrawal, Noah Bailey, Michael Belmares, Jake Murray and Mark Walden.

Several students also submitted their record books for proficiencies in several areas, including 2017 PHS graduate Kate Golden, who was a county winner for viticulture; junior Kiersten Caldwell, a county winner for veterinary science; and junior Cody Nelson, a county winner both for agricultural services and wildlife management.

Senior Ryan Steed received a second-place award for agricultural repair and maintenance.

The first place books will now move on to the region competition with the hopes of making it to the state finals, said Mary Martineau, FFA adviser and agriculture teacher at PHS.
