‘Waitress,’ ‘Charlie’ and more top touring-show lineup

Everything old — or at least well-seasoned — is new again in Broadway/San Diego’s just-announced 2018-19 lineup of touring shows, as multiple recent Broadway revivals of big-name musicals are set to hit town.

But joining such durable favorites as “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Cats,” “Miss Saigon” and “Hello, Dolly!” on the road-show slate are some notable newcomers: “Waitress” and “Aladdin,” which are both still running on Broadway, as well as the just-closed “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

The touring presenter, part of the national Nederlander Organization, also is bringing back a trio of big shows seen relatively recently in San Diego: “Wicked,” “The Book of Mormon” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”

A closer look at the dates and productions:

“Waitress,” Nov. 27 to Dec. 3: The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles teamed with screenwriter Jessie Nelson to adapt the late Adrienne Shelly’s much-admired movie into a musical. Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus (“Hair,” “Pippin”) directs the story of Jenna, a waitress and pie-making whiz who “dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage.” (Oceanside resident Jason Mraz’s limited engagement — his Broadway debut — in “Waitress” has recently been extended to Feb. 11.)

“Hello, Dolly!,” Jan. 15-20, 2019: The much-revived musical about an exuberant early-1900s matchmaker returns in director Jerry Zaks’ hit production. Bette Midler recently stepped out of the lead role on Broadway, replaced by Bernadette Peters, but there’s no word yet on tour casting.

Disney’s “Aladdin,” Feb. 20 to March 3, 2019: One of two season shows directed by San Diego’s own Casey Nicholaw, the movie-based “Aladdin” makes its first visit to town, riding a nearly four-year Broadway run (so far).

“Cats,” April 16-21, 2019: Put your paws together (or get your claws out), because composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s reworking of some T.S. Eliot musings into a furry fantasia is padding its way back onstage again. The most recent revival of the show that brought us “Memory” closed on Broadway in December, but will live on in the tour swing.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” May 14-19, 2019: Jack O’Brien, the former Old Globe artistic chief turned Broadway heavyweight, directs this adaptation of the fantastical Roald Dahl tale about a mysterious candy-man and a poor kid whose luck is about to change. The songs are by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who also teamed with O’Brien on “Hairspray.”

“Fiddler on the Roof,” May 28 to June 2, 2019: This latest revival of the classic musical likewise has local connections. It’s directed by former San Diego theater maverick Bartlett Sher (a Tony winner for “South Pacific”), and on Broadway it starred UC San Diego grad Danny Burstein as Tevye, the poor Russian milkman whose hopes and struggles are set to such memorable songs as “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”

“Miss Saigon,” July 9-14, 2019: That show with the helicopter descends on San Diego again; the just-closed Broadway revival is directed by Laurence Connor, and revisits the story of a young Vietnamese woman facing upheaval via war and the arrival in her life of an American G.I.

Extra-season events (non-subscription):

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” Oct. 2-7: Last here in 2016, the show about the enormously influential singer-songwriter Carole King tells her life story through her own songs, including “One Fine Day” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”

“Wicked,” Oct. 31 to Nov. 25: Once the hottest ticket in town, and still going strong after nearly 15 years on Broadway, composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz’s musical rolls back around to retell the back story of the witches from “The Wizard of Oz.”

“The Book of Mormon,” July 23-28, 2019: Likewise a Broadway sensation (and still a hot ticket), the gleefully raunchy “Mormon” — created by the team behind TV’s “South Park,” and co-directed by Casey Nicholaw — brings its satirical take on religion and more back for a fourth go-round.
