Ouch! ‘South Park’ is latest to take shot at Chargers’ attendance
For Chargers haters, the laughs keep coming. And maybe they’re just a little more satisfying when it comes on the national stage.
First it was Jimmy Kimmel making fun of weak crowds at StubHub Center with his faux marketing campaign, “Sunday’s Self-Guided Meditation Retreats.”
Now it’s the animated Comedy Central show “South Park,” which savaged both the team and the NFL in a new episode.
As shared in a Twitter post by San Diegan @big_kremppin, who took a video of the show off his television (you can hear a baby crying in the background), “South Park” has a scene in which the Chargers are hosting the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football.
That’s timely, of course, because L.A. does indeed host Buffalo on Sunday, though the game is at 1 p.m.
The stadium — though as rendered is much larger than StubHub — is completely empty, save for one fan sitting in the stands, nachos in his lap, looking bewildered in his No. 17 Philip Rivers jersey.
The announcer voiceover: “A record sellout crowd in the stadium! Football is clearly more popular than ever with a whopping 17 million in attendance!”
The Bills deliver the opening kickoff to the sound of crickets.
Funny.
Next follows a typically obscure “South Park” reference. On the seats are small bowls of water.
Says the announcer: “The NFL, of course, is working really hard to reach new viewers, and it looks like they’ve found an answer in tardigrades.”
We had to Google that one. Tardigrades are water-dwelling, eight-legged micro-animals — otherwise known as “moss piglets.”
For those who watched the entire episode, the “moss piglets” were central to the theme about a science experiment.
