Beach Blanket Movie Night pays tribute to surf culture

Movies that paid tribute to surf culture, “A Fly in the Champagne” and “Dear and Yonder,” played out on the big screen with the setting sun over the ocean as their backdrop at Fletcher Cove Park.

The annual Beach Blanket Movie Night, put on by the Solana Beach Parks and Recreation Commission, attracted residents of all ages on Aug. 22.

Singer-songwriter Kevin Misajon lent his mellow, surf rock-reggae music talents to the audience with a live performance, somewhat delayed due to electrical problems, before the films.

Fletcher Cove recently underwent a major landscape design renovation, spearheaded by mayor and landscape architect Mike Nichols, in which a sloped grassy area was created with gatherings like this in mind.

The Clean and Green Committee’s booth educated attendees about clean energy alternatives. They also featured a Mini Cooper “Mini E” electric car, which runs solely on electricity and produces zero carbon emissions to demonstrate alternatives to gas-powered vehicles.

The raffle was a highlight for some attendees, who went home with items including a bike and surfboard. The $3,470 raised at the event went back to the Parks and Recreation Commission.
