The fifth generation of mobile broadband networks, or 5G, will contribute to the digitization of society and economy and will pave the way for a fourth industrial revolution, according to a report presented on Monday in Barcelona.

To make 5G a reality in Europe by 2020 will be essential to the success of key sectors, Gunther H. Oettinger, Commissioner of Digital Economy and Society, said in a press conference at the Mobile World Congress, or MWC, in Barcelona, where the report was presented.

He explained that the sectors that will be “significantly” affected by 5G include automotive, health and digital industry, while there will be a remarkable progress in other fields such as transportation, energy, manufacturing, media and entertainment.
