Actor Daniel Craig welcomed to Mexico City as distinguished guest

British actor Daniel Craig, who currently is promoting his new James Bond film “Spectre” in Mexico, was honored with the title of distinguished guest in Mexico City, this capital’s government announced Tuesday.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera on Monday held “a meeting among friends with British actor Daniel Craig, the star of the new Agent 007 film,” he said in a communique.

At the meeting, the mayor presented Craig with a parchment designating him as a distinguished visitor of the Mexican capital.

Craig personally thanked the Mexico City authorities for their support and help during the filming and for the honor, which was presented to him on Monday at the National Auditorium.

At the ceremony, which came before the first screening of the film here, Mancera and the star of the last three James Bond movies “chatted about the important sequence of events for the opening of the film, which was shot in the streets of Mexico City’s Historic Center,” the communique said.

Mancera emphasized the importance of the production in pushing the international image of the city and the country, along with its culture and traditions.

The filming began in December 2014 and the action takes place in London, Mexico City, Rome and certain areas of Morocco.

The Mexican scenes take up the first 10 minutes of the film and were shot last March in the capital’s historic center, where Craig could be seen escaping during a Day of the Dead procession.

Some 500 extras were used in the filming of those scenes, along with 1,000 different costumes, 450 masks and a makeup team consisting of more than 100 people.

Presumably this will be the last time that Craig portrays the British secret service agent, given that the actor said last month that he is not planning to take on the role again after starring in “Casino Royale” in 2006, “Quantum of Solace” in 2008, “Skyfall” in 2012 and now “Spectre” in 2015.
